The 4:30 a.m. Coffee: Why Hunters Take Their Morning Cup Seriously
There’s a particular kind of morning that only hunters understand. The alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m. and you’re ready. You know that any other time of year, you’d hit snooze, but today you don’t. You head straight for the coffee, get dressed, and grab your gear. By 5:00 a.m., you’re out the door. It’s still dark, it’s probably cold, and most of the world is still asleep. But you’re awake enough to know that you’re on your way to the woods, hoping to get there and get settled in before first light.
For us, fall is when those memorable mornings really begin. Hunting season is here. The deer, elk, and antelope are moving, the mornings are getting cooler, and the rut is just around the corner. After months of planning and anticipation, those early mornings in the field are finally here.
You’re up before daylight, moving quietly through the dark, paying attention to the wind, and trying to get into position without disturbing the animals you came to find. It takes preparation and set up. It takes patience, and it means getting out of a perfectly warm bed when it would be much easier to stay there. It also takes coffee.
At 4:30 in the morning, coffee isn't just about caffeine. It’s part of the ritual. There’s something about making that first cup while the house is still quiet, taking a few sips while you’re getting your gear organized, and knowing that in a few minutes you’ll be heading out the door. Sometimes you finish your coffee at home. Sometimes you pour it into a travel mug and drink it on the drive toward the hunting area. Either way, that first cup is a crucial part of what could become an incredibly rewarding and successful day.
There isn't really one “best” coffee for hunting. The best hunting coffee is the one you actually want to drink when that alarm goes off. For some people, it’s a strong dark roast and a quick shot of espresso for the road. For others, it's a medium roast brewed intentionally and slowly in a pour over coffee maker before walking out the door. The brewing set up doesn't matter nearly as much as having a coffee you look forward to.
Lately, we’ve been reaching for Howlin' Wolf Espresso. A shot of this dark roast espresso goes a long way at 4:30 in the morning, and Howlin' Wolf is exactly what we need to mobilize that early. It has the bold, rich flavor we want when we're trying to wake up and get moving before sunrise.
You can spend months preparing for a hunt. You scout, practice, check the weather, study the wind, get your gear ready, sight in your bow or rifle, and think through every possible scenario. Then the morning finally comes, and you're driving through the dark, coffee in hand, watching the clock and thinking about getting into position as soon as possible. You might sit for hours and never see the animal you're looking for. You might hike miles. You might never have the right opportunity for a clean shot. You might come home empty-handed.
The coffee, at least, is a little more predictable. Those first sips before a morning hunt are when the transition begins from everyday life to the woods. Maybe it's the warmth of the mug in your hands or the caffeine starting to kick in. Or maybe it's simply the quiet of those miles before you reach the woods when the worries from the work week start to fade away.
For us, that's what makes the 4:30 a.m. coffee so special. It’s not just something we drink before we go hunting. It's an essential part of getting ready for what will become an incredible hunting adventure, regardless of the outcome.
So when that alarm goes off this hunting season, we'll be getting up, brewing a cup, grabbing our bows, and heading out the door before first light. Hopefully, we'll come home successful. But either way, we'll have had a dang good cup of coffee before sunrise.
Grind. Brew. Drink. Hunt. Repeat.
